Buckwild star Shain Gandee: Dead at 21 in off-roading accident |
Tragic news out of West Virginia: MTV "Buckwild" star and fan favorite Shain Gandee (affectionately refrred to as "Gandee Candy") died early Sunday morning. While a cause of death has not been released, carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected. [Editors Note: Please see our post regarding possible circumstances on how carbon monoxide poisoning could have happened while Shain was offroading). Shain, his 48-year old uncle David Gandee, and a third unidentified man were found in Shain's 1984 Ford Bronco. The wrecked vehicle with all three men inside was located in a muddy ditch in a wooded area only miles from Gandee's home in Sissonville, West Virginia.
Authorities had been searching for Gandee since he was reported missing early Sunday morning and planned to send an aviation unit out as they recieved a call that a truck had been located. Sources claim the men were last seen at approximately 3:00am Sunday leaving a bar. They told friends they planned to go "off roading" (a term used to describe taking a vehicle on unsurfaced roads). This was a passion of Shain's, and an activity prominently displayed on the show 'Buckwild'. Though not normally extremely dangerous, off-roading does have risks and Gandee was often shown driving recklessly on the television series.
On of Shain's last tweets from his Twitter account was posted Saturday night (March 30th), possibly just hours before the accident. "Saturday night!!! Lets let drunk people!!!" he wrote. His account has since been updated, possibly by a family member. "This account will be turned into Shains Angel account. You will get tweets daily from Heaven.
Earlier today, West Virginia's Kanawha Sheriff's Office released a statement in regards to Mr. Gandee's death:
"We cannot confirm the identities of the bodies at this point, but there are three. The vehicle was found at 11.30 a.m. this morning in a wooded area near Shain’s house. We are dealing with a geography problem right now because it is a remote area and the car is in a ravine. The bodies have not yet been moved, and I estimate that a passerby found the car. Shain and David were last seen at Big Larry’s bar at 3 a.m. on Sunday night, and they were reported missing later by family. I don’t know if they crashed, but that’s a strong possibility."
MTV networks have also made a public comment about the loss of their up and coming reality star: "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident," a spokesperson for MTV said in a statement. "We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."
"Buckwild" was recently renewed for a second season. Several other castmates have made headlines lately for run-in's with the law. Salwa Amin was recently arrested for heroin possession and subsequently sent to jail for violating terms of her bond.
Michael Douglas Burford, who made appearances on the show, was charged in February with driving under the influence.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gandee family during this heartbreaking time.
We will keep you updated as more details are released. Please feel free to leave comments. How will YOU remember Shain?
